Secondhand, made easier

OpShop.Kiwi is being built to make secondhand easier to find, easier to buy and easier to sell. New Zealand has thousands of op shops, vintage stores, antique stores and independent secondhand businesses, but finding them isn't always easy. Their online presence is scattered across websites, social media, maps and marketplaces, while many smaller stores simply don't have the time, people or technology to keep everything updated.

OpShop.Kiwi is bringing more of that together in one place. Whether you're looking for an op shop on your travels, hunting for something special online, or you're a secondhand seller trying to reach more customers, I want OpShop.Kiwi to make that journey easier.

Built specifically for secondhand

OpShop.Kiwi isn't a general marketplace with a secondhand category added to it. It is being built around the way secondhand actually works. That starts with The Guide, helping people discover op shops, vintage, antique and independent secondhand stores throughout New Zealand.

The OpShop.Kiwi Marketplace gives verified New Zealand secondhand businesses and organisations another way to sell their stock online, while giving shoppers somewhere dedicated to buying secondhand from genuine sellers. Behind those are the tools I'm continuing to develop for sellers, designed to reduce some of the repetitive work involved in managing secondhand stock across physical and online stores.

Some are available now and others are still being built. The goal isn't technology for the sake of technology. It is using it to make secondhand easier.

Why it matters

Every secondhand purchase keeps an existing item useful for longer, but the impact of secondhand goes well beyond that. Charity op shops help fund services in their communities, independent secondhand businesses create livelihoods, and vintage and antique sellers preserve things that might otherwise disappear. Customers save money, discover things they couldn't simply walk into a chain store and buy, and help keep perfectly usable goods in circulation.

There is also a much bigger problem still to solve. Not everything donated or collected can be resold. Textiles in particular remain a challenge, and one of my longer term ambitions is to explore commercially useful destinations for material that has reached the end of its wearable life, including possibilities such as composite materials, insulation and acoustic products. That's not something OpShop.Kiwi can solve today, but it is part of where I want this journey to eventually lead.

Meet AJ

Hi, I'm AJ, founder of OpShop.Kiwi. Secondhand has been part of my life for about as long as I can remember. I grew up shopping in op shops and secondhand stores, and even during the years when I could afford the flash and fancy stuff, I somehow kept finding my way back to secondhand, particularly for my work wardrobe.

I've also spent close to three decades around retail and charity shops, so I've experienced this world as a shopper, an employee, a manager and now as the person crazy enough to start building technology for it. OpShop.Kiwi began taking shape in late 2025 during a period of my life when circumstances suddenly gave me a lot more time than I was used to having. What started as an idea to keep my brain occupied grew considerably beyond what I first imagined.

I incorporated OpShop.Kiwi Limited in February 2026 and I've been building, questioning, changing and learning ever since. I haven't done that thinking in isolation. One of the most important decisions I made early was to ask for help, seek advice and surround myself with mentors, advisers and people prepared to challenge my assumptions. The business I'm building today is better because of it.

There's a much longer story behind how I got here, including childhood op shopping, K'Road vintage stores, an army satchel with a rather large anarchy symbol, some considerably harder chapters and eventually the idea that became OpShop.Kiwi. You can read that story in "Why I Built OpShop.Kiwi" on the OpShop.Kiwi Blog.

Where I'm going

OpShop.Kiwi is still young, and the Guide and Marketplace are only the beginning. I'm working toward a connected suite of tools that can help secondhand sellers manage stock, sell in store and online, reduce repetitive work and reach customers well beyond their local communities. In time, I want to explore opportunities for New Zealand secondhand sellers to reach international buyers too.

Beyond selling, I want OpShop.Kiwi to contribute to a much bigger conversation about what happens to goods when they can no longer be sold, particularly textiles. It's an ambitious road, and I'm quite certain parts of the plan will change along the way because plenty already have, but the purpose underneath it hasn't.

Help more people discover secondhand. Help secondhand businesses and organisations succeed. Keep useful things in use for longer. That's what I'm building OpShop.Kiwi for.
